Have you ever…
Have you ever found yourself asked to give a presentation and had that terrible feeling of anxiety in the pit of your stomach? Your fight or flight mechanism kicked in and you wanted to run away or argue passionately why you can’t do it?
Imagine what it would be like if instead you were able to respond with an enthusiastic “yes!” instead of searching for excuses to get out of it! What opportunities would open up to you?
Let me guess.
You have a secret desire to get over this but you’re reluctant to take action? Your head tells you the facts: “If you want to get ahead in your career, you need to do this.”. But your heart says: “yeah I know. But maybe next year? I’m not ready for this yet…”
The good news?
You’re not alone. I know the feeling myself – it’s how I was nearly 20 years ago before I took the plunge and took action. I was shy, reluctant, awkward, and somewhat terrified! Maybe even more than you are right now! I spent several years in that zone in my early twenties, wanting to do something about it but somehow never being quite ready.
So what tipped me over the edge?
I was pushed into giving a series of conference presentations and they went badly wrong. And I mean really badly. I could feel the audience’s embarrassment for me. It was not an experience that I would wish on anyone. After that I knew I had to get help. I joined my local Toastmaster’s group. It was the start of a journey and I’ve never looked back.
What did I learn on that journey?
I learned that you don’t have to be alone with this. Once you reach out for help, it’s there. I had the opportunity to learn from some great speakers along the way, and I got better and better. I started to really enjoy it. So much so that 10 years ago I started teaching other people.
Along the way, something dawned on me. Great speakers are made not born. I witnessed first-hand the transformation of reluctant, scared, nervous, terrified, terrible speakers into competent speakers. Then from competent to good. Then from merely good to great.
Was there something special about these people?
No. Nothing other than the fact that they had made the DECISION to take action.
Think about that for a moment.
The only thing standing between you, and the ability to be a confident speaker is a decision. Once you make that decision, everything else will click into place. It sounds simple. And it is.
Stop right now and make a list of the reasons you want to become confident at speaking in public. Take a long hard look at them. I’ll bet they’re pretty compelling.
Did you make a decision?
Are you going to walk away right now and spend more precious years ‘thinking about it’, or is something keeping you here? This is the point where you need to decide how you’re going to proceed.
This course isn’t for everyone.
It’s not for you if you believe that everyone’s abilities are fixed at birth and it’s impossible to change. If you just want to passively listen to some lectures about speaking and not try doing it yourself, it’s not for you. If you don’t mind taking weeks, months or even years to accomplish what you could do in one day with the right help, it’s not for you.
It’s your decision.
If you want to finally put your public speaking fears to rest, then this course has been designed for you. It’s designed to get you over the first hurdle. You’ll find that it’s a safe place to take your first steps without consequences if you fail at first. Learning to speak in public is like learning to ride a bike. It’s a skill, not a gift. The truth is that almost everyone will ‘fall off the bike’ at first. Our job is to make sure you have a soft landing, practise staying upright, and then get riding without someone holding you up!
